Planning, Design and Construction FAQs from the 2026 PDC Expo

Are you one of the many people who have stumbled upon Silentia privacy screens and thought, “I’ve been looking for something like this!” or “Where have you been all this time?” If so, you’re in good company. We recently exhibited at the 2026 ASHE Planning, Design, and Construction Summit & Expo, and many of the people we met on the trade show floor felt the same way.

The PDC Summit is the premier annual gathering in the U.S. for healthcare architects, interior designers, and hospital facilities and planning teams. It’s one of the best events for engaging with professionals who navigate the daily complexities of patient privacy, adaptable healthcare spaces, sustainability, and infection control — which is why Silentia made it a priority to exhibit for the second year in a row.

Silentia has been present in the U.S. for over a decade, proudly partnering with many of the country’s top-rated hospitals to deliver forward-thinking patient privacy solutions built for the demands of modern clinical environments.

This year’s Summit allowed us to reconnect with many of the hospitals and firms we already work with, while also introducing Silentia to professionals who were unfamiliar with our products. These conversations were valuable, and a clear pattern emerged: many attendees were asking the same questions.

We’ve gathered the most frequently asked questions here as a quick resource for anyone new to Silentia, our screen system, or our capabilities within planning, design, and construction.

1. What materials are your panels made of?

Silentia screens are available in two options: laminate panels and polycarbonate panels. Both are hard-surface, easy to wipe down, and built to hold up in demanding clinical environments.

Laminate panels are available in our standard color palette or can be produced in custom colors, making them a reliable choice for facilities looking for a clean, consistent look that aligns with their environment or brand. Polycarbonate panels, also known as our Daylight panels, are semi-transparent, allowing natural light to pass through without sacrificing patient privacy. They are the panels on which we print imagery to make our designs appear especially bright and vibrant. For facilities interested in incorporating art or nature imagery into their spaces, Daylight panels are a compelling option.

The two panel types can also be combined for added visual appeal. Our “Daylight Duo” configuration alternates laminate and polycarbonate panels, while “Daylight Top” features laminate panels with a section of polycarbonate panels along the top. Both combinations give design teams additional flexibility to balance light, privacy, and aesthetics in a single screen system.

All other parts of the screens, including handles, trims, mounts, trolleys, wheels, and other small components, are made of either high-quality aluminum or plastic, designed to withstand frequent cleaning and daily wear in any healthcare environment.

2. Are Silentia screens mobile or wall-mounted?

Well, both, but that’s not all. Silentia privacy screens can be mounted on a mobile trolley base, wall, headwall, medical rail, or floor pole, giving facilities the flexibility to choose what works best for each space. Mobile screens can be repositioned as needs evolve, making them well-suited for multi-use areas or spaces that see frequent change. Wall, rail, or floor pole-mounted options provide a more permanent, streamlined solution for dedicated patient bays and treatment areas.

The ability to mix and match configurations across a facility is something architects and planners tend to find particularly valuable. With the ability to connect and combine various screen types, a solution can be reconfigured as patient care needs change.

Simple and flexible

3. What planning and design services do you offer?

On the planning side, our team offers space planning consultations, site assessments and walkthroughs, product recommendations tailored to your specific environment, and CAD and other technical drawing capabilities to assist with designing a new facility or reconfiguring an existing one.

On the design side, Silentia screens are available in a wide range of colors and imagery, along with options for custom sizing, color matching, and branded or printed panels. For healthcare systems looking to maintain a cohesive aesthetic or incorporate wayfinding and brand identity into their spaces, we have the flexibility to support that vision.

4. Do you have design/BIM/Revit files for your products?

Yes, and this was among the most common questions we heard from architects and designers at our booth. Silentia’s BIM and Revit files are available as free downloads directly from our profile on BIMobject. Simply download and incorporate them into your project documentation from day one. Access our BIMobject profile.

5. Do you offer product presentations on-site or in person?

Silentia representatives are available for in-person or virtual presentations with architecture firms and hospital planning and facilities teams. It’s an effective way to communicate the needs of your specific project and to gain deeper insights about our screen system and how it’s designed to support long-term cost savings, infection prevention, and sustainability.

6. Do you offer proof-of-concept mock-ups?

Yes, we can facilitate on-site mock-ups. Experiencing a product in your actual space often changes the conversation, particularly in clinical environments where every detail carries weight, and many stakeholder groups may be involved.

For starters, we have an online configurator tool, called EasyScreenDesign, that lets you explore our products and design options as you create your own screen solution. Check out EasyScreenDesign.

We hope this gives you a helpful starting point, whether you’re encountering Silentia for the first time or revisiting us with a specific project in mind. The questions we heard at the PDC Summit reflect the kind of thoughtful, detail-oriented work that healthcare architects, designers, and facilities teams bring to every project, and we recognize the importance of being part of those conversations.

If you’d like to learn more or discuss an upcoming project, we’d welcome the opportunity to connect in person. Reach out to request a product presentation from our team.

Silentia publishes 2024 Sustainability Report

Silentia has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, our second annual publication and an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility.

Last year, we established our first baseline for environmental impact with the release of the 2023 Sustainability Report. This year, we continue building on that foundation, tracking our progress and sharpening our focus on sustainable product design.

The 2024 Sustainability Report compares our environmental, social, and governance performance directly against 2023, providing a clearer view of where we’re improving and where we can continue to grow. From emissions data to procurement practices, the report reflects a full year of learning, refining, and advancing our sustainability work.

“As our business continues to grow, we have seen both opportunities
and challenges: absolute emissions increased with higher production
and more global deliveries, yet we also reduced our direct emissions
and strengthened our focus on circularity.”

– Dag Göranson, CEO and Co-founder

For decades, Silentia has focused on sustainable design rooted in hygiene, durability, and resource efficiency. In this year’s report, we highlight one of our core eco-design principles—repairability—and show how building long-lasting products supported by fast, local repairs reduces environmental impact while improving value for hospitals.

The report includes real-world examples that illustrate how our sustainability principles translate into measurable outcomes. At Bispebjerg Hospital in Denmark, 260 disposable curtains were replaced with Silentia’s modular screens, resulting in a reduction of ongoing waste and an enhanced hygienic patient experience.

This year, we are also proud to share the positive verdict from Hållbar Upphandling, recognizing Silentia’s alignment with sustainable procurement standards and reinforcing the value of long-lasting, repairable privacy solutions.

“Together with our partners and customers, we will keep driving
change toward a healthcare system that is not only more
resource-efficient but also more resilient and hygienic.”

– Dag Göranson, CEO and Co-founder

Looking ahead, Silentia will continue to strengthen our product design, expand our repair capabilities, and collaborate with partners to reduce environmental impact across healthcare settings. As we deepen our understanding of our footprint, we remain committed to transparent reporting and to pursuing solutions that support both people and the planet.

Silentia and Doktor Universe partner on innovative pediatric care experience

Silentia and Doktor Universe partnership_header

Across hospitals in the Central Denmark Region, Silentia and Doktor Universe are partnering to bring together mobile privacy screens and interactive projection, offering a fresh, hygienic approach to creating calmer, more engaging spaces for children in care.

For children, a hospital stay can be intimidating, confusing, and stressful. Healthcare teams work hard to make the environment friendlier, but traditional tools like toys, games, wall décor, or portable TVs and tablets can be costly, static, and hard to keep clean. In the Central Denmark Region, a new collaboration between Silentia and Doktor Universe is showing how two proven products can combine into one flexible and highly effective solution that also improves cleanliness.

Silentia’s Platform for Hygienic Flexibility

Silentia’s privacy screens continue to serve as an important alternative to textile curtains in hospitals worldwide. Their smooth, disinfectant-safe surfaces support infection control, while their folding, mobile design provides privacy exactly where it’s needed. With a lifespan of 10+ years, the screens deliver strong long-term value and require minimal maintenance.

The mobile bed-end screen has become a go-to tool across all hospital departments for creating quick, clean protection around a bed or treatment area. In pediatric care, it serves as a flexible way to create privacy when needed or keep treatment areas open and free of intimidating equipment when it’s not needed.

Doktor Universe’s Narrative Room Technology

Narrative Room is a battery-powered, mobile projector that can instantly transform any treatment space. It projects licensed, age-appropriate films, games, and music onto a wall and uses a built-in camera to track a child’s gentle movements without requiring touch.

This allows children to control interactive content simply by waving their hands, which helps distract them from pain or anxiety during procedures. With content that is pre-approved and tailored to patients and their environment, staff can confidently select what’s appropriate without extra preparation.

Benefits for improved care

The two products complement each other naturally. Silentia’s mobile bed-end screen can double as the transport and mounting point for Doktor Universe’s projector. Staff can roll the screen into position, turn on the Narrative Room, and instantly create a calming, interactive space without moving the child or compromising hygiene.

The combination of the two tools reduces the need for separate equipment carts, décor, or additional room setups, lowering costs and freeing up staff time and floor space.

This integrated approach provides four major advantages:

1. Improved hygiene: Smooth, easy-to-clean screen surfaces and touch-free interaction.

2. Flexible deployment: Easily moved between rooms or wards without cables or permanent installation.

3. Targeted content: Licensed, age-appropriate media designed for clinical settings.

4. Cost efficiency: Fewer fixed installations and less need for individual room decoration.

Collaboration in action

At Aarhus University Hospital for Children & Adolescents, nurses use the privacy screen and projector to calm and engage pediatric patients during treatment. Similar units are already in use in hospitals across Denmark and Greenland, with plans to expand to the rest of Scandinavia and beyond.

By combining Silentia’s proven privacy solutions with Doktor Universe’s innovative digital platform, hospitals gain a practical, hygienic, and engaging way to improve children’s experiences. This simple integration delivers a powerful outcome. It turns hospital time into a moment of calm and play for young patients while supporting healthcare professionals in their daily work.

Visit Doktor Universe to learn more about their projector technology and connect with our team to learn more about this partnership and our other innovative approaches to pediatric care.

Introducing the Whiteboard screen: Supporting patient privacy and communication

Silentia introduces a new design option that integrates whiteboard panels into the bed end mobile privacy screen.

This innovative screen solution not only contributes to patient privacy but also enhances communication between patients and staff, fostering a safer and more comfortable patient care environment.

Effective communication between patients, their families, and healthcare staff is critical in any care setting. The bed end whiteboard privacy screen is designed to address this need while simplifying patient care and enhancing the patient experience.

Whiteboard panels: Glossy, non-magnetic panels that can be written on with dry-erase markers.

Whiteboard strip: The whiteboard strip allows magnetic accessories to be attached to the screen.

The mobile bed end screen is easy to clean, move, and store, and is an essential component of the Silentia screen system. With the addition of whiteboard panels, this version of the bed end screen offers greater versatility, significantly improving privacy, hygiene, and delivery of patient care.

By combining the privacy of the bed end screen with the functionality of a writable surface for notes, instructions, and patient information, healthcare providers can enhance the quality and delivery of care.

All Silentia products, including the bed end whiteboard screen, meet strict hygiene standards with surfaces that can be easily disinfected. The Silentia screen system supports patient privacy, infection control, and long-term resource efficiency.

The whiteboard panel option is currently only available on our mobile bed end screens.

Silentia publishes first annual Sustainability Report

Sustainability Report-blog-header

We have released our first annual Sustainability Report, marking an important milestone in our commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility. As a trusted provider of hygienic, durable, and modular privacy solutions for healthcare, we believe sustainability starts with data—understanding our impact so we can continue to improve.

Silentia’s 2023 report outlines our total greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3, establishing a baseline for future reductions. From production-related procurement to employee commutes, every aspect of our operations is now under closer scrutiny. The report was compiled using the Klappir Sustainability Platform and follows international ESG guidelines from Nasdaq Nordic and the UN Global Compact.

“We hope this report inspires action and collaboration. It’s a first step, but an important one,” says Dag Göranson, CEO and Co-founder.

For decades, Silentia has focused on product design that supports infection prevention, durability, and resource efficiency.

In our report, we outline the five eco-design principles that guide our innovation—centered around hygiene, safety, durability, reusability, and repairability. These principles are already shaping hospital outcomes worldwide, helping reduce material waste and extending product life cycles.

Photo: Karl Hjalte

The Sustainability Report includes real-world examples that bring our data to life, showing how Silentia’s approach to durability and reusability is already making a measurable impact.

At Gødstrup Hospital, screens were reused during a renovation thanks to our EasyLog system, a tool that enhances traceability and maintenance while making it easier for hospitals to reuse screens during renovations or relocations. At Central Hospital Växjö, long-lasting screens remain in use decades later, avoiding significant waste and reinforcing the value of sustainable design.

Sustainability is not a checkbox—it’s a journey. And we’re just getting started.

With the release of this report, Silentia’s next steps include setting a baseline carbon reduction plan and publishing product carbon footprints by 2026. We will continue refining our designs, expanding repair capabilities, and exploring more sustainable materials. As our understanding of and ability to track our impact becomes more advanced and aligned with the demands of modern healthcare, we will continue to report on it annually.

Our commitment to resource-efficient privacy and sustainable healthcare [Video]

Silentia global headquarters in Falkenberg, Sweden

As our planet experiences unprecedented shifts in climate patterns, the healthcare sector faces unique challenges in adapting to and mitigating the consequences of these changes. For hospitals, working with sustainability is a twofold challenge, as the industry is a major contributor to issues of waste and consumption.

As resource efficiency becomes a critical focus of the healthcare industry, Silentia remains committed to supporting hospitals with future-proof patient privacy.

The challenge of sustainability in healthcare

According to recent studies, US hospitals generate over 29 pounds of waste per bed per day (Practice Greenhealth, 2023), reaching a total of 7000 tons of solid waste per day nationally (STATnews, 2018). Globally, in many countries around the world, health systems account for 5%-10% of carbon emissions.

“There has been a perception in the sector that green initiatives are costly, but you’re choosing to eliminate waste, and waste is usually associated with cost,” says Matthew Meyer, University of Virginia (Bloomberg, 2022).

Considering the environmental impact of waste from the healthcare sector, hospitals must adopt a proactive approach to mitigate the effects. There are two key factors toward a more sustainable future: energy conservation and conscientious use of materials. By reducing energy and material resources and ongoing costs to use and upkeep them, hospitals will see key environmental and financial advantages.

This calls for innovative and proven products designed to advance the transition from short-termism to long-term solutions. This is at the core of ensuring a more resilient healthcare system.

Supporting sustainable healthcare through resource-efficiency

At Silentia, we welcome the increased attentiveness towards climate-friendly products and initiatives. For more than 30 years, Silentia has been committed to supplying hospitals with future-proof patient privacy.

For many of our customers, the emphasis has been, and still is, to replace privacy curtains to improve hygiene and prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, our customers are also seeing the environmental benefits of replacing curtains, which require significant resources and yield significant waste during their use phase.

Silentia screens have a proven lifetime of more than 10 years, eliminating the ongoing logistics, labor, and recurrent waste associated with exchanging and laundering curtains over that time. Thus, as we reaffirm our commitment to resource-efficient solutions and continue to improve the quality and lifetime of our screen system, our customers’ total cost of ownership will continue to decrease, and environmental benefits will continue to increase.

To achieve this, we have established five eco-design principles, which solidify our commitment to and accountability for products that will support resource efficiency and our customers’ sustainability efforts.

Hygiene: Design that optimizes infection prevention and control.

Safety: Stable, reliable, and user-friendly products.

Durability: Products built to last with a proven lifetime of 10+ years.

Reusability: Products with modular, compatible design, able to be reinstalled.

Repairability: Minimal design and materials that allow for easy maintenance locally.

Going forward, we will share more cases where our screen system has helped hospitals and clinics around the world improve their resource efficiency and provide better care. Moreover, as a company, we will move forward with an increased focus on ESG reporting and collaboration with our suppliers. Stay tuned for more!

Silentia launches new products at MEDICA 2022

Silentia exhibit booth at MEDICA 2022

Silentia proudly participated as an exhibitor at the 2022 MEDICA expo in Düsseldorf, Germany, earlier this month. MEDICA is the world’s premier medical trade show for technology and innovation in modern outpatient and clinical care, and it’s one of the largest healthcare industry trade shows around the world with over 81,000 attendees and 5,000 exhibitors at this year’s event.

Customer and distributor engagement

After a two-year hiatus, there was palpable excitement at this year’s event as attendees were eager for opportunities to explore new technologies and innovations, share knowledge, and connect in person once again with professionals from across the healthcare industry.

Our Silentia team was excited to re-engage with our customers and network of distributors after the challenges of trying to do so over the last couple of years. We also looked forward to connecting with new individuals who share our vision for modern patient privacy solutions.

Given the size and scope of MEDICA, we wanted to take this opportunity to share the growth and development Silentia has experienced as a company over the last few years. We wanted to highlight the our shifting focus from being product-oriented to system-oriented to solution-oriented. This vision for how we can help our customers address their privacy challenges was part of many conversations throughout the week and was reinforced by the experience attendees had when stepping into our booth.

A space created for connection

The large, open format and clean, stylish design of our booth created an inviting atmosphere that encouraged visitors to step into our space and engage with our team. There was ample space to display several of our screen designs and allow visitors to get hands-on with our products. After all, there is no better way to understand how our screens are easy to use and can address the challenges of modern patient care than to try them.

The quality and value of our products experienced in these interactions was reinforced by other media available in the booth. Displayed on the wall were large-format videos detailing how our products are designed, developed, and used by health care teams, and other printed materials were available as take-aways for interested visitors.

New product launches

MEDICA is an iconic setting for launching new products into the market and this year was no exception. For the first time, we were able to share with our customers and distributors two new products that have been in development for the past couple of years: Semifix and PPE holder.

Semifix is our endlessly flexible solution that combines extension and folding screens to create defined private spaces where none exists. Designed to address privacy, hygiene, and capacity planning all at one, this new solution offers a way to quickly scale up the level of privacy and the number of private areas a healthcare team may need. Booth visitors exploring the Semifix solution for the first time noted the Lego-like capabilities of the solution to be combined and changed easily depending upon the desired level of privacy and protection, at any given moment.

Silentia Semifix screen

Our PPE holder is a screen accessory designed to provide quick, easy access to hand sanitizer, gloves, masks, and any other PPE materials when working with patients. This attachment easily clicks on to any Silentia screen and gives staff or patients the safety and comfort of protection at arm’s length when entering a patient area, working alongside a patient, or interacting with family members. (The official release of the PPE holder is slated for January 2023—stay tuned!)

Silentia PPE holder attachment

Momentum for the future of privacy

The positive reception of our new product solutions at MEDICA is evidence that there is a desire and need for safer patient privacy that practically addresses the challenges today’s health care teams face. In fact, many attendees noted that our system continues to get more complete as health care teams continue to have more of a need for our solutions.

MEDICA was an important opportunity to continue the conversation around improving patient care by providing cleaner, safer solutions. While it was a valuable experience for our team, nothing compares to the value of working alongside healthcare teams in hospitals and clinics around the world.

Connect with our team today and let’s work together toward the future of patient privacy.
